Saturday, Feb 5th, 2011. Location the Scout House from 1-4 pm. Registration is at 1:00 PM sharp. We have a tight schedule so please be on time.
Rules: This year we will be using the Flintlock District Pinewood Derby Design and Construction Rules. The biggest change from past years is that the axles must be attached to the car in the pre-formed slots provided on the block of wood. Drilling holes for the axles is not allowed. Cars will be checked and those that do not meet the rules will not be allowed to race. (See attached rules dated 2009). Events 1. Speed races. Each den will race as a group (but large dens may be broken into two groups), each car running against other cars in the den or group (multiple runs in different lanes to eliminate lane biases.) Prizes for first through fourth place in each den/group. The four fastest cars in each den/group advance to the Pack Speed Race. There will be preliminary heats with multiple runs in different lanes similar to den/group races. The four fastest cars in the preliminary heats advance to the Finals. Prizes for first through fourth place in Pack. (Pack winners do not receive prizes at the den/group level). 2. Precision Rolling (Bulls Eye). Each car gets three trials to be pushed from behind a line toward a series of concentric squares marked on the floor. Prizes in den/group for first through fourth place. 3. Backward Speed Race. Cars run backwards down the three-lane mini-track. Prizes in den/group for first through fourth place. (Note: cars designed with the weight in the back for high-speed on the main track will be slower going backwards on the mini-track, giving the slower cars a chance to earn a prize.) 4. Super G. Car rolls down a ramp. Score is the lateral distance the car curves off of a straight line. (Note: most all the cars turn a little. This event is a fun way to “reward” cars that don’t go too straight.) Prizes in den/group for first through fourth place. 5. Most Creative Car. This is the only “judged” event. Parent volunteers from each den vote. Prizes in den/group for first through fourth place. 6. Snacks. Drinks and snacks will be served throughout the afternoon. Help with Your Car Not everyone has tools or is comfortable working with tools. If you need assistance, contact Drew at cubmaster149@gmail.com but please don’t wait until the last minute if you need help. Check out the attached document for building tips for your car. It was compiled by some of the parents based on their experiences. Car Numbers – soon the spreadsheet with your son’s name and the associated number will be emailed to you. Make sure you use that number as we will set up the computer’s beforehand to help make the day go faster. Design Template – attached you will find a template that can be used for you to sketch out your car before you start cutting.
